Responsible Gambling in Ontario
Tools, resources, and guidance for safe play at AGCO-licensed casinos.
Online gambling is entertainment — not a way to make money or solve financial problems. Ontario’s regulated market gives players access to strong protections built into every AGCO-licensed casino. This page explains every tool available to you and how to use it.

Is Gambling Safe in Ontario?
Gambling at an AGCO-licensed casino is legal and regulated in Ontario. The province operates one of the most robust consumer protection frameworks in the world for online gambling. Every licensed casino must provide deposit limits, loss limits, session timers, and self-exclusion tools by law. These are not optional features — they are regulatory requirements enforced by the AGCO.
However, for a minority of players, gambling can become harmful. Problem gambling affects an estimated 1–3% of the population. Recognising the warning signs early and using the tools below can prevent serious harm.
Responsible Gambling Tools at Ontario Casinos
Deposit Limits
Every AGCO-licensed casino must allow you to set a deposit limit — daily, weekly, or monthly. Once your limit is reached, further deposits are blocked for that period. This is the single most effective tool for staying in control of your spending.
How to Set a Deposit Limit
Log in → My Account → Responsible Gambling → Deposit Limits → Enter amount → Choose period → Confirm. Limits take effect immediately. Increases require a 24–48 hour cooling-off period before taking effect.
Loss Limits
A loss limit caps how much you can lose in a session, day, or week. Once reached, your account is locked from further play for that period. Set this before you start playing — not during a losing session.
Session Timers & Reality Checks
Ontario casinos are required to offer session timers that alert you when a set time has passed. Reality checks pop up every 30, 60, or 90 minutes to show how long you have been playing and your net position. These break the immersion that makes time feel shorter than it is.
Cooling-Off Periods
A cooling-off period temporarily suspends your account for 24 hours to 6 weeks. During this time you cannot deposit or play. This is useful if you feel you need a break but are not ready for full self-exclusion.
How to Set a Cooling-Off Period
Log in → My Account → Responsible Gambling → Cooling-Off → Choose duration → Confirm. Takes effect immediately. Cannot be reversed during the period.
Self-Exclusion
Self-exclusion permanently bars you from a casino for a chosen period. Ontario offers two levels:
Single-Casino Exclusion
- Excludes you from one operator
- Available directly in your account settings
- Minimum 1 week, up to 1 year or permanent
- Account closed, balance returned
- Takes effect within minutes
Multi-Operator Exclusion
- Covers all 47 AGCO-licensed operators
- Registered via ConnexOntario
- Minimum 6 months — up to indefinite
- All operators notified within 24 hours
- Cannot be reversed during the period
How to Register for Multi-Operator Self-Exclusion
Call ConnexOntario: 1-866-531-2600 or visit connexontario.ca. A counsellor will walk you through registration. All 47 licensed Ontario casinos are notified automatically. This is free, confidential, and available 24/7.
Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling develops gradually. The earlier it is recognised, the easier it is to address. Ask yourself honestly:
Common Warning Signs
- Gambling with money budgeted for rent, bills, or food
- Chasing losses — trying to win back money you have lost
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble or spend
- Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when not gambling
- Needing to gamble with increasing amounts to feel the same excitement
- Using gambling to escape stress, depression, or problems
- Neglecting work, relationships, or health to gamble
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
If you recognise two or more of these signs, speaking with a counsellor is strongly recommended. It is not a sign of weakness — it is the most effective action you can take.
The AGCO Framework: How Ontario Protects Players
Ontario launched its regulated private online casino market in April 2022. The AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) and iGaming Ontario jointly oversee the market. Licensed operators must:
- Provide all responsible gambling tools described on this page
- Display the 19+ age requirement prominently
- Hold player funds in trust accounts separate from operating funds
- Submit to quarterly independent compliance audits
- Participate in the multi-operator self-exclusion programme
- Verify player identity and age before processing withdrawals
- Respond to player complaints within defined timeframes
If a licensed casino fails to honour a legitimate withdrawal or violates these standards, you can file a complaint directly with iGaming Ontario at igamingontario.ca.

Talking to Someone You Trust
If you are concerned about your own gambling or someone else’s, talking to a family member, friend, or GP is a valuable first step alongside professional support. Problem gambling is a recognised health condition — not a moral failing — and effective treatment is available.
Remember
Gambling is entertainment with a cost. The house always has an edge over the long run. Set your budget before you play, stick to it, and treat any winnings as a bonus — not income. If gambling stops being fun, stop.
